CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Alison sat at home and had never felt more alone. She had lived alone ever since moving out of her parents’ place, but she had never felt this isolated and lonely. A part of her wondered if she could get a dog, not only for protection, but for company. A dog might help protect her, but it wouldn’t help with the isolation.

The isolation didn't come from not being around people; it came from the emptiness she felt at not knowing where to go next in the investigation. She went back to her sister’s old case files, and then to the current files on Sophia Miller and Natalie Carter.

They didn't engage with the same social circles, nor practice at the same sports complexes. They were both athletes, but that was currently the only connection between them. Alison knew they’d been chosen because they were athletes. The killer was choosing people to mimic her sister, and it followed that the next victim would be a young female athlete. The only problem was that it was like looking for a needle in a haystack.

They were no closer to finding the killer, and it was impossible to locate the next victim. Oakland was a big place, and they couldn’t protect every single young female athlete.

Both families had been interviewed, along with the friends of both victims, and they both said the same thing. Both young women were extremely driven, good, positive people, and had no one who would want to kill them.

That fit with the killer’s M.O. If the killer was targeting people to mimic Emma’s death twenty years ago, then they were being chosen mostly at random. They only had to be young female athletes to fit the profile.

The question still swirled around in Alison’s mind: has the killer returned, or is this a new killer?

She leaned toward it being a new killer. It was someone who was specifically targeting her, and there was no reason for the original killer to do that. Of course, there was no reason for the original killer to kill her sister.

"Aargh!" Alison shouted out, throwing her hands up.

The more she thought about the murder twenty years ago and the current murders, the less it made sense. The killer in both cases was careful, not leaving any evidence. They had planned well and made sure they wouldn’t be caught. The current killer had left notes to taunt Alison, showing he was arrogant and confident, as he knew her and her sister's case, but he wasn’t so arrogant that he gave too much information. So far, he hadn’t slipped up.

Alison didn't want to focus on getting lucky in the case. She didn't want to have to wait for the killer to mess up and leave them a clue because that would mean waiting for at least one more crime scene. She wanted to be the one to find the killer.

That brought it back to the one thing she knew for sure. The killer had a reason to taunt her.
